Southern English Setter Society

Championship Show Sunday 20th November 2011

Not a big entry but I had some pleasing exhibits to go over. As a Gundog All-Rounder I do not try to out-do the Breed Specialists but aim for a soundly made dog that conforms to the standard and moves well - I hope to get the heads right if I can. The venue is a great hall - but I was glad of Sat-Nav to find it. It was also pleasant to catch up on old friends from the Elstead Club where I trained for 30 years; we always had a good English Setter contingent attending.

One thing that did strike me and needs mentioning - FEET - no gundog's feet should be flat or with thin pads - of which I saw far too many today. I know most of us do not have the opportunity of using our dogs for the job they were designed for - but that does not let us forget and change the shape of the foot that the standard requires.

Minor Puppy Bitch 3 (1ab)

1st Schoneville & Perry's, Balvenie Vee Marieorange belton bitch of 7 months, pleasing headpiece excellent neck set into well laid shoulder , well sprung rib , strong loin and good topline and tailset - well boned legs - just preferred her more positive movement to 2's.

2nd Birch & West's, Hitides Lily Miss Lucie, 6 ½ month orange belton, sweet head, set on good neck, good front angulation - at the moment crabbing in movement, this can be sorted, well sprung rib, good topline and tailset, well boned leg and good feet.

2nd Evans and Patterson's, Gillancette Emerald Lady, 10 months orange belton, sweet headed lady, at the moment the rear is more angulated than the front - so she crabs to get the front legs out of the way of the back - this could still straighten up as she continues to grow.. she had excellent rib, loin topline and tailset, good bone and feet.
