Southern English Setter Society-Bitches 17th November 2013 I would like to thank the society giving me the opportunity to judge at their Championship Show. I was also very grateful to receive the good entry that I did. One thing I must say was quite noticeable was just how many exhibits had light eyes which are really taking away the softness of the expression that our breed should have. On another negative, and this was only really in the younger classes was an awful lot of high tail actions. I would forgive this more in a male but there is no reason for bitch's to be doing it! On the positive mouths seemed not too bad and temperaments were what is expected of our breed. MPB 6 (2 AB) 1st Montell's, Culverwell Calamity Jane. Really well put together tri with lots of promise. Lovely markings. Correct shaped head. Really well balanced for a youngster, stacked and on the move. well handed. BPB. Lost out to a really good dog pup for BPIS. 2nd Colville's, Arabin Top Secret. Tri with really good bone and substance. A little hesitant on the move for a start but went better the more she moved. Everything is in the right place but needs to tone up a little in particular her topline. 3rd Montell's, Culverwell Rosy Dawn. PB 9 entries (4 ab) 1st Stephenson & William's Lakecastle Sakura at Wistaston .Smart eye catching orange. Really well proportioned head and dark eye although eyes a little round for my liking but still had the desired soft expression. Balanced throughout and moved soundly. Won the class well. . 2nd Stirk's Twyline Truly Skysablaze Over Grakar Dark orange. Stunning headed girl with a lot to like but sadly carrying far too much weight which spoilt her overall balance. Did however move well despite her weight. 3rd Montell's, Culverwell Rosy Dawn. VB 3 entries (1 Ab) 1st Deerings, Rosetimber Foxy Lady. Blue who's still thinks she's a pup. Bombed round the ring with drive and style with lashing tail. Not the head I would go for but this could not deny her the class. 2nd Mortimer's, Marlowsett Colour My Life at Phlerdor SHCM A tri that has been a favourite of mine for many years. So sorry to say she was favouring a leg on the move today. JB 6 Entries (3 ab) 1st Collis & Passey's, Richecca Fallen Angel. Beautifully put together o/b. Still a long way to go for all the finishing but won the class for soundness, especially on the move. I will be very interested to see her again once she's bodied up. 2nd Carlin's, Sodalitas Silent Witness. B/B with the most stunning head and expressive eyes. Good angulation throughout. Sadly today was lacking coat which spoilt her balance. Needs to shed a few lbs too as it is affecting her topline. 3rd Davis', Richecca Baby Doll of Merleycopse YB 5 6 entries (2 ab) The first three bitch's in this class are of the highest order. 1st Montell's, Culverwell Christabelle B/b for which stole the day for me. If I had to bitch one exhibit t take home with me on the day, she would be my choice. Everything I wish to see in the breed, from temperament to soundness. I seriously considered giving her higher honours but her best is still to come. 2nd Watkins, Valsett Starlite Upsy Daisy. Beautifully marked tri. Very different in type to 1 but still very sound. I loved her length of muzzle as so many other exhibits were short in foreface. If I had to change anything I would want her eyes darker. Her angulation both front and rear is to be admired though. 3rd Darley's, Bournehouse Water Music at Sevensett NB 3 Entries (2 Ab) 1st Collis & Passey's, Richecca Fallen Angel. GB 5 Entries (4 ab) 1st Weller's, Juldeane Morgan Fay. B/b in really firm condition. Good strong head without losing femininity. Dark expressive eyes. Long strong neck leading into well laid back shoulders. Moved soundly and effortlessly around the ring. I'd like to see her in more coat. PGB 12 Entries (2 Ab) 1st Swannell's, Rickory Bizzie Lizzie Top quality Tri in perfect firm show condition. Stunning head and dark eyes with melting expression. Strong level top line. Moved with drive and lashing tail. Fabulous hind quarters. Came so close for the CC today. Must be destined for her title. Res CC. 2nd Grimsdell's, Tattersett Frankel JW Another quality bitch. B/B shown today in superb condition. Like 1 she is nicely balanced both stood and on the move. Must have a bright future. For me though I preferred the head and eye of 1. Her positives still outweigh her negatives. 3rd Rumble's, Jotuheim Va Va Voom LB 10 Entries (3 Ab) 1st Hartle's Hartsett Cherry Bee JW. I've seen this O/B look better than she did today but it is a credit to how good she is that she could still win a strong limit class whilst not at her best. Stunning head and dark eyes with sweet expression. Great barrel of rib and really made well throughout. Moved really soundly but not so enthusiastic for some reason. 2nd Loynd's, Richecca Sea the Stars at Crimbledale. Cracking B/B with bags of appeal. I very nearly gave her the class but she's still some way off the finished article yet. I would love to meet her again after a litter and firmer condition. For type she is everything I look for. 3rd Carlin's, Wynacre Last Tango For Sodalitas OB 6 Entries (1 Ab) 1st Watkins, Valsett Starlite Rosy Moon O/B that totally shocked me today. I have to be honest and say she is a bitch I have never really taken much notice of before. The saying that every dog has it's day is very fitting in this case. She ticked every box for me and certainly deserved the CC and with agreement from my Co Judge Best In Show. On today's performance it surely cannot be long until she gains her title. Presented perfectly. Well done to all concerned. 2nd Cook's, Moorbrook Uptown Flirt at Pernickety. Another top Quality O/B. So Much to like about her. Long clean neck leading to well angulated shoulders. Strong Top line. Good hind quarters which she used so well on the move. For me preference however I did find her head and expression just not quite feminine enough, but that's just a personally preference thing. I liked her a lot. 3rd Grimsdell's, Tattersett Doctor In Love SBB 4 Entries (2 ab) 1st Davis's, Richecca Baby Doll of Merleycorpse. A Tri which was an absolute fidget! Plenty of substance and bone. For the few seconds that she stood still she looked very balanced. Moved well. 2nd Kerr's, Fanchon Lawby Miss Clawdy Taffi (imp) A very strong headed b/b. Very different in type. Shown in lots of coat and condition. Very well handled. It will be interested to see how she develops.
Bitches Southern English Setter Championship show 17th November 2013 held at Tadley, Hampshire. I was somewhat surprised and disappointed at how much the majority of the English Setters have changed and unfortunately not for the better. The standard asks for bright, mild and expressive oval eye. I saw plenty of dogs with round protruding eyes which totally changes the soft melting expression we used to expect from the breed. Feet also seem to be a problem, again very few have the well padded tight feet with close well arched toes. And shoulders, well I could probably count on one hand the dogs that actually had the correct layback of shoulder with good return of upper arm. Upright shoulders and short upper arm seem to be the order of the day and this does hinder the movement, a dog cannot reach in front with a short upper arm and incorrect shoulders. On the upside I was pleased with my winners there are nice examples about so please think carefully before breeding. Dogs Minor Puppy (5) 1st - Trigwell & Weller - Hannahdene Danny Boy - At 9 months this orange dog has an exciting time ahead of him. I loved him, he has the most beautiful head and eye with melting expression. Stands on good legs and the best of feet, correct rounded bone, superb neck and correct layback of shoulder with length of upper arm. Excellent topline with a good tail set. Lovely bend of stifle and moved really well for one so young driving from his super hindquarters. Delighted my co-judge and I were unanimous in the decision to give him Best Puppy In Show. I shall look forward to watching his progress in the future. 2nd - Gilbert - Brucelm Wykhill at Shadowood - Giving a lot away in age and maturity but has a lot of potential. He has a lovely head and eye with good neck and shoulders, level topline, just needs to tidy up on the move. 3rd - Penn - Culverwell Golden Glory Puppy (3) 1st - Hodge - Lakecastle Tomo - Gave this dog's dam her first CC and she has passed her qualities on to her son. Lovely head and eye with good layback of shoulder, well constructed all through . Good legs and feet correct topline. Although naughty he has potential. Unfortunate to meet the minor puppy on such good form. 2nd - Bennet - Mariglen Blue Star - Could not match the head and expression of the winner, lovely coat and condition. 3rd - Feerick - Canonsett Highland Mist Veteran (5) 1st - Taylor - Sh Ch Wansleydale Royal Flush JW - Beautiful head on this orange dog, well balanced, excellent neck and shoulders, retains his topline at all times and he moves so well. Shown in super coat & condition Best Veteran In Show 2nd - Dunks- Samelen One Man - Unlucky to meet 1. Lovely head and expression, good legs and feet, excellent topline, well held tail on the move. 3rd - Hammond - Hartsett Going for Gold with Oaktrish Junior (8)(2) 1st - Mellish - Gemsett Pole Position for Monbrec - Blue dog, naughty but nice 17 month with a beautiful head and expression, lovely front end assembly, good topline. Excellent bone, nice tail and set. Moved well. 2nd - Kirsch - Sorbus Hugo Boss - orange of a different type to 1. Good head, neck & shoulders, excellent topline nicely angulated rear quarters, just tended to get his tail up on the move. 3rd - Whitehorn - Upperwood Summer Sky of Wennvale Yearling (7)(2) 1st - Thompsett - Radbrooks God Only Knows - Smaller build than 2 but balanced all through, nice head and eye, good front, level topline, in good coat and condition, moved well enough. 2nd - Schoneville & Derry - Balvenie Clandestine JW - balanced tri nicely put together, good topline, excellent legs and feet. 3rd - Harris - Culverwell First Footer into Konakakela Novice (6)(1) 1st - Mellish - Gemsett Pole Position for Monbrec 2nd - Kirsch - Sorbus Hugo Boss 3rd - Neath - Albadora Remember Me Graduate (5) 1st - Watts - Jotunheim Limited Edition - Blue dog of lovely type with a good neck and shoulders, would like a little more return of upper arm. Clean neck, level topline. Could do to loose a couple of pounds. 2nd - Whittington - Juldeane Excalibur - tri of a lighter frame than 1 but substantial, lovely head and eye, longer cast than 1. 3rd - Warrington - Culverwell Causing Chaos Post Graduate (7) 1st - Mortimer - Phlerdor Thief of Time - Smaller built dog but balanced all through, lovely head and eye, good neck and shoulders, level topline, shown in lovely coat and condition. Looked a picture standing could have done with a bit more drive but it may have had something to do with the limited space. RCC 2nd - Jolley - Wansleydale Tribute to Jolymore - different type to 1 but lots to like, nicely put together, another lovely dog. 3rd - Pead - Sparsett Hembury Explorer of Lakeview Limit (5)(2) 1st - Taylor - Wansleydale King of Hearts at Bramstorm - This breeder seems to keep getting it right and produces quality time and time again. Standing this dog has everything in the right place, beautifully constructed, the best of neck flowing into correct shoulders, excellent return of upper arm, level topline, excellent legs and feet correct bone, short coupled, beautiful rear angulation and super on the move. If I was being hyper-critical I would like a little less back skull and his tail tends to creep up on the move, but nothings perfect. Still delighted to award him the CC and I understand this was his 3rd. Congratulations Reserve Best In Show. 2nd -Stephenson - Wistaston Starting School at Steeplow. Another nice dog, longer cast than the winner and consequently not as strong in topline. He moved out well and did keep his tail down. Unlucky to meet 1. 3rd - Mottishaw - Upperwood Hooray Henry Open (5)(2) 1st - Darley - Severnsett Mask of Zorro- Balanced dog, profusely coated, he has a lovely head and eye, good front, level topline, good tail and set. 2nd - Schoneville & Derry - A dog I have previously awarded the RCC, but today he was not at his best, good tail and set, nails could do with some attention. 3rd - Colville & McLoughlin - Arabin Midnight Breeze Special Beginners (4) 1st - Whittington - Juldeane Excalibur 2nd - Pead - Sparsett Hembury Explorer of Lakeview 3rd - Watts - Jotunheim Limited Edition Judge : Ruth Martin
