Southern English Setter Society, 15th January 2023 Bitches I thank the SESS Officers and Committee for their hospitality and for a very enjoyable day. You can always be assured of a warm and friendly atmosphere at the Southern English shows. Thanks to my very able stewards, Dilys and Rita, for keeping everything in order. I was happy with my final lineup, although many of the bitches were not in their best coats today. Minor Puppy Bitch (4,2) 1st: Sharples Kanietter Sabonette: 7month-old b/b very good balance and size for age. Outgoing and not overawed by the occasion. Gentle, pleasing expression, oval eyes with low set ears. Good reach of neck flowing into correctly placed shoulders. Well developed in body including depth and spring to ribs. Kept topline on the move with tail set just dropping off back, just needs to settle when moving which will come later. Should give owner some fun going forward. BP & BPIS: 2nd: Bevans Mariglen Bronte (TAF): Just six months old, so not as well developed in body as 1. Very pretty, feminine head with kind eyes. Has decent shape and proportion to body. Level in topline and moved with verve from good rear quarters. Veteran Bitch: (1) 1st: Taylors and Atyeos Samelen Golden Taffeta: Lovely 8-year-old o/b, dam of BIS winner. Good clean definition and shape to skull, with dark eyes and kind expression. Body has good spring to rib together with depth, a moderate length back, looks well-proportioned giving balanced outline. Good angulation to hindquarters which have strength together with good muscle tone. Enjoyed her day out and moved soundly to win BVIS. Junior: (2,1) 1st: Dearings Pettifox Of Rosetimber: 15month o/b, to begin with was unsettled when standing, but did improve. Very pleasing head, good stop with soft, kindly eyes. Has decent shape and balance in her body which now needs to fill. Ribs are well rounded with medium length to back, rear quarters have well bent stifles. Hocks straight and let down when viewed from rear. Yearling: (4,1) 1st: Jennings-Sharman and Sharmans Wansleydale Mayfly: Liked this 20 month tri, exceptionally well developed and balanced for her age. Clean cut and relatively lean oval head, well defined stop with tight, kind oval eyes. Good front, straight from forearm down, elbows well tucked close, tight feet, lean and arched neck with well-set shoulders. Ribs have adequate spring, depth and are well carried back. Muscular hindquarters with good bend to stifle and straight in hock. Moved steadily, keeping her outline and balance, which helped her to win this class today. 2nd: Beasleys Wansleydale Mayflower: So little to choose between these two, litter sisters, as I found later, so many comments from above apply. Growing on well and has plenty of promise in balance, shape, and size. Head has sufficient brain room with definition to occiput, defined stop with pleasing expressive bright eyes. 3rd: Collis & Passeys Richecca Winter Melody: 23½ month light tri but not quite as together in body as 1 and 2. Friendly and outgoing, feminine with well-proportioned head, ears set in line with bright gentle eyes. Symmetrical angles to fore and rear quarters. Happy mover, carrying herself well. Novice: (2,1) 1st: Collis & Passeys Richecca Winter Melody. Graduate: (2) 1st: Jennings-Sharman and Sharmans Wansleydale Mayfly: As before. 2nd: Dennis, Morgan and Harris Mariglen Unwrapped JW: Beautiful head, very feminine light tri, soft, kind, and expressive oval eyes, low set ears, carried close to cheek. Long and lean in neck with clean throat. Good angulation to fore and rear quarters but without exaggeration. Body has depth, moderate length in back and tail set well in line. Post Graduate: (4,1) 1st: Tuckers Walshaw Center Stage: O/b with lovely shape and working of head, completely balanced. Good front, the shoulder blades had just the right width at withers with good layback. Long thighs from hip to hock with width, muscle tone and strength. Overall has a very balanced shape, with level topline and was one of the best movers today, showing plenty of free driving movement from hindquarters. 2nd: Tompsetts Leilasett Northern Lights Over Radbrooks: Well-made O/b with just the right substance and shape. Has feminine head, good dark, soft expressive eyes. Neck flows into shoulders cleanly and with right amount of layback. Body proportions balanced both in length, spring in rib and depth. 3rd: Reiths Niddbeck Smokey Islay At Ownways. Limit: (6,2) 1st: Tuckers Walshaw Save The Last Dance: Good class and could change places, just preferred positive movement today from my winner. B/b with a very typical, feminine head with plenty of work coming from stop, chiseling, and expressive bright eyes. Front was very true, with short pasterns, well up on toes. Correctly placed shoulders, moderate length to back with short coupling. Good depth and spring to ribs, balanced in proportion throughout. Strong hindquarters including muscle to thighs. Moved well from rear with drive. 2nd: Mugfords Alolfrana Sugar N Spice At Lynwood: Another tri who I really liked. Has balance and substance without coarseness. Lovely head of oval shape, good stop and reasonable depth to muzzle, gentle, expressive dark eyes. Long neck, flowing into good placement of shoulder. Showing a balance over body and hind quarters. Just fell short on her movement today. 3rd: Mariglen Serendipity At Kanietter. Res: Darleys Severnsett Dark Angel. Open: (3) 1st: Dennis, Morgan and Harris Sh Ch Gemsett Ice Cold In Alex At Mariglen JW: Awarded her best puppy over 3 years ago. she has grown into a very elegant, quality, orange bitch. Beautiful clean head, with defined stop with dark, expressive eyes, ears set close and low to her cheeks. The arched neck flows cleanly into the withers with well-angulated shoulders, medium length body with depth, short coupled, with good sweep to the hindquarters and correct tail set. Thus, giving a very symmetrical outline. A little more coat today would have truly completed the picture. BCC, RBIS and BOS 2nd: Rumbles Jotunheim Ooh La La: Close, but just preferred the balance of 1. Orange, good front construction, straight with depth and adequate width to brisket, well up on tight feet. Liked her head, carried well, with balance between skull shape and muzzle. Expressive, kind eyes, and low set ears. Mature and well ribbed, good angulation over front and rear quarters. Moved well in challenge with head held high to win RCC. 3rd: Hoskins Gilancette Lady of Leisure. Judge: Christopher Bird |
