SOUTHERN ENGLISH SETTER SOCIETY OPEN SHOW 18.7.10.

What a lovely way to spend a Sunday ... judging a breed show on a typical English village green in glorious sunshine and a slight breeze. This proved something of a walkover for the fairer sex with bitches taking all the major awards. Whilst my winners impressed me, I found the most common faults to be lack of angulation front and back with the corresponding restricted profile movement. I was also surprised to see so much untidy dentition in such a moderate gundog breed. The exhibitors were extremely sporting.

MPD (1) 1. Jones’ Kerrimere Catch a Dream for Redbornstoke, 6 ½ months orange of quality, masculine head with kind expression. At the moment at the rather “bum high” stage, needing to drop into his rear and feet need to tighten. Basically good balance and angulation throughout and he is already well ribbed. Moves with some scope in profile but needs to tighten coming and going.

PD (4) 1. Rush’s Tattersett Future Gamble, 11 months orange of excellent overall type and shape. His head needs to break as at the moment he appears a little shallow in stop, but it is well balanced and his expression pleases. Excellent bone and rib with good feet and he has optimum angulation. Despite his age he moved really well, up, down and around. BPIS to his litter sister who at the moment appeals more in head. Should finish up really well and I am sure has a great future. 2. K. Catch a Dream for R. 3. Stephenson’s Wistaston Starting School at Steeplow.

VD (2) 1. Tompsett’s Radbrooks Break Away, 9 year old blue of good overall type and balance. Masculine head but a shade lippy, excellent bone and feet, good angulation front and back, well ribbed and holds his topline well. Moved steadily. BV. 2. Sayers’ Mariglen Take Me I’m Yours for Christter, 7 ½, heavily boned and strong headed, good basic type, not as true moving as 1 and tends to break in topline.

JD (4) 1. Thompson’s Ravensett Ralph Lauren, blue just out of Puppy and whilst not a sudden-impact kind of dog on the stack, when he moves he pulls himself together and coordinates beautifully. Lovely quality head, good bone and feet but with maturity he should develop in forechest and this causes him to stand a little ten-to-two in front. Perfectly balanced outline, just a little light in body condition which is probably just an age thing. Looks his best when moving as he uses his angulation so well, covering the ground freely and with great ease. Could develop into something special. 2. Watkins & Hayden’s Mariglen Snowdrift at Hayworth, 17 months blue who set up looked the obvious winner. Lots of type and shape about him and he is better bodied than 1 with good bone but could have tighter feet. Pleasing head and expression, well balanced throughout. Moves true up and down but in profile tends to snatch in front. 3. Hill’s Mandyset Slippery Customer.

YD (1) 1. M. Snowdrift at H.

ND (1) 1. Salmon’s Burleycott Irish Cream, 2 year old orange, all male to the point of being a little strong in backskull. Well boned and ribbed, stands a little untidily in front and topline tends to be a little high at the rear. Moved quite steadily.

GD (1) 1. Wood’s Swannery Magical Moment, 2 year old blue, unexaggerated and typy, good basic head proportions but a little skully. Excellent bone and feet, well ribbed, ideal angulation with well balanced outline. Comes on true but goes away a little close and could have more rear drive.

PGD (4) 1. Loakes’ Goldbirch Guys n Dolls, 2 year old orange who proved one of the most frustrating dogs of the day. He has such a lovely way of going, having great style and ring presence and he moves on a loose lead with ease and power, but when he sets up he tends to stiffen and lose his rear angulation. Excellent head and expression, well ribbed, firm topline and ideal balance of outline. Had I judged purely on the move he way well have gone one better; as it was, he ended up RBD. When taking photographs later I made a few handling suggestions to his owner and we managed to set him up where he made the best of his rear angulation. With some work I feel he is good enough to make up. 2. Sketchley’s Kerrimere Royal Design, 3 years old orange who on the stack looked the probable winner as he clearly has greater length from hip to hock than 1 and more turn of stifle. Glorious head and expression, well boned with tight feet and well sprung ribs. Really liked him but sadly on the move he was rather lethargic and could not match 1 going away or around. 3. Taylor & Atyeo’s Pewterspeare Pirate Cove.

LD (4) 1. Dunks’ Samelen One Man, 4 ½ years orange with a beautiful head and soft expression. Makes a pleasing overall picture when set up but a little more angulation front and back would enable him to open up a little more on the go-around. 2. Kirsch’s Soul Mate of Sorbus, 6 years blue of excellent type and shape and I see litter brother to BD so it is no surprise that he is the same overall stamp. Well balanced head, clean flowing outline, just a little sluggish compared to 1 and rather blousy coming on. 3. Taylor & Atyeo’s Harvancourt Nice Touch.

OD (2) 1. Kirsch’s Shining Star of Sorbus. 6 years blue of excellent overall type and balance. Well balanced masculine head which could perhaps have a little more work in it, strong but clean neck, moderately angulated front and back with good forechest and well sprung ribs. Moves steadily and soundly if not with the greatest enthusiasm but I felt his overall correctness merited BOS. 2. Hammond’s Hartsett Going for Gold with Oaktrish, 4 years orange with lovely head and expression and good basic shape. Not as well filled in front as 1 and his movement is not his strongest feature.

SBD (3) 1. S. Magical Moment. 2. B. Irish Cream. 3. Pead’s Sparsett Hembury Explorer of Lakeview.

MPB (2) 1. Tompsett’s Radbrooks Kokomo, 6 months heavily marked blue with some promise. Feminine head, obviously at this age she needs to drop into her rear but she has excellent basic conformation which manifests itself when she opens up so impressively on the move. Already happy and confident, should do well with full maturity. 2. Sketchley’s Kerrimere Lindy Lou, 6 months orange with a glorious head and expression who needs to gain confidence and use her tail. Well boned and ribbed, feet a little open and she could have a little more neck to balance. Rather choppy mover.

PB (3) 1. Brown’s Tattersett Flutter Money, really classy 11 months orange who made a great impression. Beautiful head and expression, elegant neck, optimum angles front and back with already good bone and rib. Beautifully conditioned, just needs to drop into her rear with maturity but she is already a very impressive mover, going accurately up and down and covering the ground easily in profile. Should have a glittering future and also has the advantage of a very capable handler. BPIS. 2. Pitts’ Wandsfell Just Love Me, 9 months more heavily marked orange. Quality feminine head, good bone but feet not as neat as 1. Stacked throws out an impressive outline with excellent angulation. Goes around well but needs to tighten considerably in front. 3. Osborne’s Llinlow Caribbean Night.

JB (3) 1. Grimsdell’s Tattersett Hebe at first glance this 18 months tricolour bitch leapt out at me for her perfect balance and complete lack of exaggeration. On the first go-around she thrilled me even more as she has such flawless footfall, great scope and lightness of foot. Although she was a little skittish when I first handled her back end, getting hands on her was a joy as everything fits and flows and she is the kind of dog that reminds us judges of the importance of moderation. Beautiful head with ideal planes and kind expression, elegant but strong neck, already well filled forechest and sprung ribs, firm hard backline and correctly set and carried tail. At this age she is not dripping in coat but this merely emphasised her classic lines and overall correctness. Should sail through to her title. I loved her! BIS. 2. Day’s Mandyset Rumour Has It, 13 months orange with a beautiful head and expression. Feet not as neat as 1 and she doesn’t have her rear angulation. Excellent neck and shoulder but needs to tighten moving up and down. 3. Stirk & Littlechild’s Ravensett Royal Diamond for Drakar.

YB (1) 1. Lewis’ Sunrush Silvery Moon, 23 months blue with basically good head type if a shade lippy. Pleasing basic shape, good bone and rib and her outline and angles please on the stack. Could move with more determination and strengthen behind.

NB (3) 1. T. Flutter Money. 2. Evans & Paterson’s Manorroy Mandarin Lady, nearly 3 years orange of excellent type. Lovely head and eye and constructionally she is so good to go over, being well put together, correctly angulated and well ribbed and boned. A very correct bitch all through who moved so soundly ... I just wish she appeared to enjoy herself more! I gather this was only her second show so maybe she will soon decide that it’s not such an ordeal and then could so some interesting winning. 3. Aldridge’s Ravensett Diamond Lil at Fleckers.

GB (2) 1. M . Mandarin Lady. 2. R. Diamond Lil at F., 2 years blue with a classy head and balanced outline who looked a picture standing. Sadly she constantly paced and moved very stiffly behind.

PGB (2) 1. Stirk’s Ravensett Diamond Romance with Grakar, 2 years tricolour beautifully presented and handled. Stacked she immediately draws the eye as she is perfectly balanced and everything fits and flows. Really good head profile but I felt she could have a little more finish of foreface when I got on top of her. Excellent neck, topline, angulation and she is well ribbed and boned. Makes a very striking overall picture standing and she moves true but did not have the exceptional frontal reach of the BIS winner. Even so well deserved RBB and later RBIS. 2. Hall’s Koolunga Silver Dawn, 4 years orange with an appealing head and eye, elegant neck, firm bone and well sprung rib. Not the rear angulation of 1, a little choppy in front movement and tends to break in topline on the go-around.

LB (1) 1. Grimsdell’s Tattersett Double Florin, 3 ½ years blue of excellent overall type and with a look of quality. Nicely balanced head if a shade light in eye. Could have a little more development of forechest for her age but she impresses in general outline when stacked with excellent angulation front and back. Could have been a little more fluid on the move.

OB (1) 1. Hall’s Tattersett Dreaming Away of Koolunga, 6 years orange of excellent overall type. Pleasing head with kind eye, well boned and ribbed, but could have a little more angulation at both ends. Moved adequately around but could have more rear drive and didn’t have the sparkle of the younger bitches.

SBB (2) 1. M. Mandarin Lady. 2. S. Silvery Moon.
