SOUTHERN ENGLISH SETTER SOCIETY - OPEN SHOW - 17 July 2011 I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee of the Southern English Setter Society for inviting me to judge their Open Show and for their kind hospitality, to the stewards, Chris and John for their able assistance in the ring, and to the exhibitors who gave me such a good entry with few absentees. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and the judging had to done inside the village hall. I thoroughly enjoyed my day of judging and was not disappointed in the overall quality of the exhibits present both in dogs and bitches. I was pleased to award Mariglen Snowdrift At Hayworth, Best in Show, Harvancourt Loving Touch, Reserve Best in Show, and Best Puppy in Show to Mariglen Gift Wrapped, all displaying character and style that is typical of this breed. MPD. (2). 1. Mottishaw's Upperwood Hooray Henry, 6 mth dark B/B baby with everything just as it should be at this age. Dark well shaped eyes, good length to neck, well angulated front and rear. Correct tail set which he used well on the move, would prefer tighter feet but no doubt this will come with age. Lots of potential, BPD. 2. Taylor & Atyeo's Hazeysunsett Vivaldi, another lovely baby, not so quite together as 1st and needing to grow into himself. He had the better feet of the two, but was moving close behind. PD. (1). 1. Tompsett's Radbrooks Homeward Bound, masculine headed B/B dog, slightly more throaty than I would like. Adequate length of neck leading into correct topline, well angulated fore and aft, excellent feet, but close behind on the move. VD. (5) Enjoyed judging this class, all were deserving of a 1st but a decision had to be made. 1. Holland's Mandyset Dirty Dancing, 91/2 year old B/B with pleasing head and gentle expression in his eyes. Good length to neck, straight front with good depth of rib. Well placed shoulders, correct rear angulation and carried his tail well on the move, positive mover around the ring. 2. Hammond's Hartsett Paper Skye For Oaktrish, well constructed O/B of 81/2 years, with masculine head, clean neck, with well sprung ribs. Plenty of bone and correct feet. Another who moved out well. 3. Kirsch's Soul Mate Of Sorbus. JD. (3). Class of promising teenagers. 1. Murray & Berry's Harvancourt's Miracle, a well proportioned young man with a melting expression. Very well constructed with a good reach of neck, correct lay of shoulder and upper arm, good turn of stifle. Free flowing movement but just needs to body up, short of coat but that only emphasised his correct construction. Son of my best bitch winner and a masculine version of her. RBD. 2. Shadwell's Canonsett Grin N' Bear It, Handsome headed dog with dark well shaped eyes, long neck leading into correct topline and balanced angulation. Good legs and feet, moved well, but slightly close behind, liked him a lot. 3. Jolley & Taylor's Wansleydale Tribute To Jolymore. YD. (3) 1. Stephenson's Wistaston Starting School At Steeplow, O/B dog with a well-developed head, clean neck and straight front. Well laid back shoulders and pleasing rear assembly. Moved soundly on good legs and feet, well muscled. He was the best mover in the class and considered him for higher honours. 2. Shadwell's Canonsett Grin N' Bear It. 3. Pitts Wandsfell Just In Time. ND. (2). 1. Thompson's Ravensett Ralph Lauren, 2 yr old B/B who moved the better of the two. Well shaped head with soft expression, long neck leading to well-shaped shoulders. Well-sprung rib cage, good rear angulation, sound in movement. 2. Hill's Mandyset Slippery Customer, O/B dog with a pleasing masculine head, but found him a little throaty for my taste. Nice balanced outline, but not moving out as well as winner. GD. (6). Movement in this class was generally not so good. 1. Cook's Moorbrook Firecracker At Pernickety, O/B dog with a handsome masculine head but a touch throaty. Correct reach of neck, well laid shoulders, straight front and well angulated rear. Well developed body, good feet, well presented coat. Adequate mover. 2. Slack's Ravensett Renaissance, dark B/B dog, close decision between these two, just preferred the feet of the winner. Well constructed throughout with correct placed shoulders and well angulated rear. Just did not give of his best on the move. 3. Shadwell's Canonsett Grin N' Bear It. PGD. (5). 1. Bridgewater, Davies & Jeffery's Brucelm Diamond Harry Rocks Bridgella, masculine dog with a well-shaped head and a glint in his eye. Well placed shoulders and upper arm, correct spring of rib, short coupled with plenty of bone. Good bend of stifle, level topline held on the move which he did with reach and drive. Well presented, loved this dog and his attitude to life, close to top honours, Rock on Harry!! 2. Wood's Swannery Magical Moment, appealing masculine head with a kind eye. Clean neck, level topline held on the move. Well angulated front and strong quarters, moved out well. 3. Oliver's Bramstorm Walk The Line. LD. (6,2). 1. Jolley's Wansleydale Loganberry At Jolymore ShCM, handsome 5 yr old B/B dog with lovely dark expressive eyes. Good reach of neck set on to good lay of shoulder with strong hindquarters. Goldbirch Guys N Dolls JW Sh.CM, mature O/B dog with lovely head and correct shaped dark eye. Adequate neck and well balanced overall with straight front and well boned legs and correct shaped feet.
